New Facility Adds Over 800 Jobs and Boosts US Solar Manufacturing Capacity
First Solar has officially opened its $1.1 billion solar manufacturing facility in Lawrence County, Alabama, creating more than 800 jobs in the energy technology sector. This new plant significantly strengthens the state’s position in the renewable energy market and expands First Solar’s domestic solar manufacturing capabilities.
Enhancing US Solar Capacity by 3.5 GW
The new Alabama plant adds 3.5 gigawatts (GW) of solar manufacturing capacity to First Solar’s US operations. Together with its three factories in Ohio, First Solar’s total US capacity now reaches 11 GW. Globally, the company’s manufacturing capacity exceeds 21 GW. Governor Kay Ivey praised the opening, stating the facility will be a key player in the country’s renewable energy landscape.
Future Growth Plans and Nationwide Economic Impact
In addition to the Alabama facility, First Solar is currently building another $1.1 billion, 3.5 GW manufacturing plant in Louisiana, expected to begin operations in the latter half of 2025. By 2026, First Solar projects to have 14 GW of annual solar manufacturing capacity in the US and 25 GW globally.
According to CEO Mark Widmar, this facility not only manufactures American-made solar panels but also supports a supply chain sourced from across the United States. With operations in Ohio, Alabama, and soon Louisiana, First Solar’s US manufacturing investments will surpass $4 billion. The expansion is expected to support 30,060 jobs nationwide, generating $2.8 billion in annual labor income by 2026.
