SAIC Motor has entered into a strategic partnership with Egypt’s Mansour Group to establish a new manufacturing plant for MG automobiles. Announced on December 29, the collaboration involves a $135 million investment to construct the facility, which will initially focus on producing the next-generation MG5 sedan. Over time, the plant will expand its operations to include SUVs and new energy vehicles, strengthening MG’s presence in the region.
Strategic Location and Robust Production Capacity
The upcoming plant will be developed within the 6th of October Industrial Park through Mansour Mobility & Manufacturing (MMM), a Mansour Group subsidiary. A land lease contract has been signed with Egypt’s Public Authority of Land and Dry Ports to enable construction. In its first phase, the facility will produce 50,000 vehicles annually, with plans to double capacity to 100,000 units in the second phase. The localization rate is projected to exceed 45%, underscoring the partnership’s commitment to advancing Egypt’s industrial capabilities.
The plant will span multiple state-of-the-art facilities, including an 8,000 m² body shop, a 12,000 m² paint shop, and a 10,000 m² assembly shop. Additionally, it will feature supporting infrastructure such as administrative offices, a 5,000 m² closed warehouse, and other auxiliary buildings. While the development schedule remains undisclosed, the facility is expected to serve as a key production hub for MG in the region.
Spotlight on the New Generation MG5
The new generation MG5, which will headline the plant’s initial production phase, was launched in September 2024 in China. Available in three trims, the sedan is priced between $11,200 and $13,100 and features significant upgrades in design, interior configurations, and performance. Measuring 4,715 mm in length with a 2,680 mm wheelbase, the vehicle offers a blend of spaciousness and contemporary style.
Buyers can choose between two engine options: a 1.5L naturally aspirated engine delivering 127 hp and a 1.5T turbocharged engine generating 178 hp. The powertrains are paired with a CVT or 7-speed DCT gearbox, respectively. Inside, the MG5 features a sporty interior with a D-shaped multifunction steering wheel and dual 12.3-inch digital displays powered by the Zebra Venus intelligent car system.
This strategic investment marks a milestone in MG’s global expansion and reinforces Egypt’s growing role as a regional automotive manufacturing hub.
